owboys and computer programs exemplify the breadth of the enterprise that is Brown Ranch Group, LLC.
The history begins when the first Brown arrived in Bee County from Georgia after the Civil War. The ranching begins when the first Austin Brown bought his initial ranch north of Beeville in 1924. In the late '40's came the origins of Brown, Beasley & Associates, Inc. (a ranch mortgage loan company) co-owned by Austin I's son, Edwin (Ed)....which became Brown Ranch Group, LLC a few years ago.
Today, Brown Ranches remains centered in Bee County in South Texas. After breeding registered Herefords and selling hundreds of breeding bulls and raising Tigerstripe and Super Baldy replacement heifers for over 80 years, the Browns transitioned into Akaushi beef production in 2005 in order to take advantage of the high demand for this high prime, unmatched beef.
Brown Ranches is a leader in Calf Backgrounding, also known as Pre-conditioning. This process of immunizing and feeding calves and tracking all aspects of the calf's history has been standard practice with Brown Ranches since the mid-'80's. And, in the last few years, this process has moved toward becoming the standard of the industry.
The recent drought conditions in Texas, the downturn in the US agricultural economy, and the resulting high retail feed prices, afforded us the opportunity to expand our feeding facility to include a bull and heifer development program. At present, we are growing and developing Hereford, Angus, Charolais, and Akaushi bulls and heifers for select customers across the State.
Austin Brown II ('66) and A3 (Austin Brown III, '93) both hold degrees in Ag Economics from Texas A&M University, as did Edwin ('39). We have grown up with the land, and continue to work cattle on horseback. In addition, our faithful Ranch Hands are a vital part of our business.
In 2005, after 50 years in the historic Milam Building in downtown San Antonio, we built a new office on the Bee County ranch. Our office manager of 25+ years, Dorothy Collins, maintains our local presence by overseeing all office management activities from her home office in San Antonio. Evelyn Curtis runs the day-to-day operations of the ranch office at Beeville. Together, they make a team that can't be beat!
